Introduction to coastal sabkhas The mainland "sabkha" coastal plain was formed from a combination of Holocene accretion of supratidal, intertidal and lagoonal sediments and an earlier accumulation of the underlying sediment wedge from the Late Pleistocene. This mix of evaporite and carbonate facies has been interpreted by Kirkham (1997) to have been initiated during the Flandarian transgression.
